Working on the landscaping~by Beth

Last week Johanna's garden club took part in our city's Walk in the Park.  There are all kinds of plants to see and purchase as well as some experts on hand for the public to ask questions of.  It was an overcast morning, and after lunch it began to drizzle/rain.  I have been wanting to get rid of an ugly bush we had in our yard ever since we moved in.  We had transplanted a 10 foot Mahogany tree when we moved in, but Hurricane Charlie snapped it a few months later.  We planned to wait for it to take root before we pulled up the bush.  I was determined to replace the ugly bush this year at the Walk in the Park event.  This is a picture of the ugly bush from last September when we put up the hurricane shutters just before Hurricane Irma hit.

When Johanna and I came home I asked Jon if he would work on getting that ugly thing out since it was a perfect day for planting and transplanting with the rain especially since this is the dry season.  It took several hours to get it all out using a reciprocating saw and a lot of brute strength , but we finally managed to get it out and the new tree planted.  Under the bush was a lot of Springer Rye with its tubers and bulbs.  We had to dig quite a bit to try to get all those pulled out of the soil.  A few days later Jon got some pieces of sod to plant over the big area with no grass.  I plan to get some mulch to put around the tree till the roots go deep.

This is a Pink Trumpet Tree.  It will grow to between 8 and 30 feet high with a lot of foliage, and best of all, flowers.  I can't wait for it to grow and bloom.  I only wish we had not waited so long to do this.

I also picked up a new hibiscus and we planted that in the front bed after moving around 3 other plants.  I took a quick shot of that little beauty.  Now to get that mulch.
